Concept. Letting in light in different shades (according to a representation of
the spectrum a daylight through the day) and amounts (according to user's needs).

Obstacles and sun light.

Investigations of inflow of sunlight.

Diagrammatic drawing of obstacles and position of the sun.
The position and angle of the sun is costantly changing. On this diagram,
 three specific positions are highlighted; summer solstice (when sun is highest), equinox,
and winter solstice (when sun is lowest).
The apartment is located on 4th floor and due to the landscape (24 meters above sea level)
 with a quick decrease in hight towards East, the only direct obstacle for optimal inflow of sunlight
 is the apartment it self and the building right next to.
Southeast of the window, the area is almost free of essential obstacles, and inflow of light
 is almost unbothered.

Adjustable reflectors.


The reflecting panels can be increased/decreased in width 
to let in more or less of specific light.

Possible construction of adjustable reflectors.


Increase or decrease a specific inflow of light.
Each reflector is fixed on an individual rotating dowel that allows the reflectors to
slide sideways maintaining a specific path controled by a sliding track.

Further development.


Channelling the inflow of light (halogen lamp priciple).
Reaching out and past the walls to optimize amount of light.
Reflectors are made adjustable in width to make it possible to increase/decrease
inflow of a specific light
In the end of the reflectors an adjustable smaller reflector can be flipped out
allowing the user to adjsut the direction of light.

Plan sections of possible designs.


Idea. The funnels increase in width in both ends. Does it let light in more effecient?
Idea. The funnel-cone-shaped reflectors increase only in the end of light output.
Works similar to the construction of a halogen lamp.

Inspiration.


A halogen lamp's contruction optimizes the amount and strenght of light comming from the light source. 
How to use the construction principles from the halogen lamp and transfer them to my attempt on dragging daylight into the room.

Investigations of reflecting materials.


I did a systematic investigation of reflection-ability on nine, more or less, different materials, e.g, glass, mirror, metal.
During the test, a constant and unchanged light source was kept. Camera's shutter speed and position was constant, as well.

The choosen objecsts for reflection tests are not not be considered for their general functions but only their materiality.

Strong and clearly defined reflection.
Sharp edge.
Strong refelction. Edges less defined.
Light and shadow blend.
Weak reflection of light. Clearly defined
and sharp edge.
Reflection is fragtioned. Light and shadow
blend and the edge is washed out.
OK reflection. The light blurs out into
shadow. No edge.
Soft reflection. Coloured as reflector.
Soft edge.
Weak reflection. Soft edge.

Inspiration. How to use a reflecting material as a representation of the different day light.



"Normally, the oxidation process in a mirror occurs randomly and evolves slowly over time. This process can be regarded as degradation, however this project shows the beauty of this material transition of silver. These mirrors reveal the different states of this process. In this case, sulphur is used to create an accelerated oxidation process. Sketches. Ideas.


Light gets projected into the room and hits coloured reflecting panels that redirect the light in
 specified directions according to the positioning of my habits. 

A moving reflector (shaded according to the mapping of day light) follows the  movement of the
light through the window projecting the different shaded light into the room.

Different shaded glass/mirror panels hang from the celing and filters/projects the day light
into the whole room.
A round surface spreads/projects light in several directions.

A sloped reflector in bottom of window projects light up on a opposite sloped reflector in top projecting the filtered/shaded light into the room.

 Leaving a representation of the light spectrum of the cycle of day light inside the room.
